Athletes enjoyed near perfect weather last weekend for the Chilham Castle Duathlons and Trail Runs despite the forecasts, for the event’s 10th anniversary.
First off on the day was the sprint duathlon, a 5K run/27K bike and 2.5K run, which the 2016 and 2017 returning champion Rory Hopcraft of Medway Tri was racing in a bid to get his hat-trick.
The second run is always a leg sapper, but that didn’t stop Hopcroft who lead from the front for the whole event, crossing the finish line and taking the hat-trick win in 1.19.35.
Followed by Jonathan Bird in 1.20.55 and David Moffat in 1.26.15.
The ladies’ event was won by Sharon Taylor of Deal Tri in 1.46.47, with Nina Batsford of Tri Spirit Team in her first multisport event coming second in 1.50.15, followed by Olivia LeRoutier of Ocean Lake Tri who completed the podium in 1.53.06.
The standard is a longer event, with a 10K run to start, a 40K bike and a 5K run to finish. First home for the men was David Lewis of Deal Tri in 2.15.52, with Keith Watson of Adalta RT coming second in 2.18.59 and third was Stephen Castle in 2.21.38.
The first lady home was Sophie Marr of Trisexuals in 2.53.21 followed by Louise Macleod in 3.25.34.
There were also various trail runs happening on the day too, over both 5K and 10K distances, including Doggy Dashes for both. First home in the 10K trail run was Steve Tricker in 44.26, with Ben Thear in 44.55, and third was Greg Park in 45.22.
Helen Oakes of Hythe Aqua was the first woman home in the 10K in 56.00, with Barbora Klimkova in 59.20, with Justine Gudgin of Ashford Run Together third in 59.50.
The 5K trail run was won by Simon Parrin in 21.40 – a great run moved him to the top spot on the podium after being second for two years in a row. That spot was occupied by Wayne Poole this year in 27.19, with Sarah Leeson coming third overall and first lady in 27.54. Third male home was Dean Kershaw in 46.14.
Coming in behind Leeson was Liz Westrup in 30.26, with Lucy Bannigan third in 30.27.
The 10K Doggy Dash was won by Austin Adams of Blackheath and Bromley Harriers AC who was running with Billy, in 58.15, with Jodi Tierney running with Ollie was second in 1.20.51.
The 5K Doggy Dash was won by Jenny Brown with Yogi in 25.27, followed by Gill O’Connor of Tri Spirit Team with Rufus in 26.03, and Jodi Harden in 26.05.
Liz King, event director for Tri Spirit Events, said: “Thankfully the weather held off for the 10th edition Chilham Castle duathlon and trails run. Everyone had a great time and special thanks to Barretts Jaguar Land Rover Ashford for supplying safety vehicles for the event. These events wouldn’t happen without our crew of marshals, volunteers including First Park Farm Scouts Ashford. We are looking forward to running the event in 2019 on 29 Sept.”
