Warm Weather Training

r3002s

There are plenty of opportunities to get away and do a bit of warm-weather training, and it can give your tri season a real boost if you can get some extra miles in before it starts.

British winters are particularly problematic to try and get good training done, and with winter training being ever more important as base training, if you can take the opportunity to travel overseas to get some miles in the sun, why not?

Sports travel companies

A number of companies offer bespoke triathlon training camps, including Pyrenees Multisport.

Going it alone

If you want to set up your own training, then you need to find a good place to go, and get your flights sorted out properly too.

Three places that we know well are in mainland Spain, Majorca and Las Playitas, Fuerteventura. The Hotel Sant Jordi in Calella, around 50km outside Barcelona, and Pollensa Park in Port de Pollensa in the north-east corner of Majorca. Las Playitas, Fuerteventura is 30km from the airport.

Calella

The Hotel Sant Jordi has a 50m pool and cycle routes that range in length from short to long, and from easy to hard, and you also have the use of a 400m running track and a 7km run route, if you prefer that.

You hotel is also around 100m from the beach, with clear sea that is a pleasure to swim in. It also has a shop where you can hire bikes if you need to.

Port de Pollensa

The Pollensa Park hotel is one of the biggest on the island, and offers a great place for triathletes to get the most our of their swimming, cycling and running.

The hotel has a 33m pool, and is a great start point for a variety of cycle routes around the island. There is also a marked 10km route starting around 100m from the hotel entrance.

It is also around 100m from the beach, making sea-swim practise an easy option.

Las Playitas, Fuerteventura

The Las Playitas Hotel and resort is a top training location in the Canary Islands, with training facilities not just for triathletes.

Triathletes  facilities are a 50m heated pool and running routes marked, plus the whole island to explore for your cycle training to keep yourself busy. For your non triathlon partner, classes such as aquarobics, step, and spinning are available for free.

We made up our own training camp and travelled with Easyjet and hired a car for our transfer. When we used the pool we had to pay 2 euros for an hours swim. We also found the wind to be very strong and wouldn’t advise beginners to cycling to train here.

Companies are now discovering Las Playitas and Trips4tri have teamed up with Rasmus Henning to help run training camps.
