Good Conditions at Windfarmer Triathlon

The Windfarmer Triathlon had usually good conditions with the sun shining and little of the eponymous wind when 200 triathletes converged on Lydd to race this weekend.

Velocity Events put on two races at Action Watersports on Sunday, a sprint which consisted of a 750m swim, followed by 20km bike section and 5km run, and a standard distance made up of a 1500m swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run.

First off in the calm but chilly water were the 51 sprint distance competitors - including Douglas Buchanan and Ben Wyatt from CNN Tri who also had a film crew in tow who were filming the race for a feature on triathlon, which will be aired in November.

As always, the swimmers soon spread out, and the first swimmer to exit the lake was Phil Jenkins in an impressive time of 10.10, followed soon after by the first female out of the water - Michaela Furlong in 11.49. Some of the slower swimmers suffered from the chill in the water.

This year the bike section was changed slightly compared to previous years, and used a well know time trial route this also resulted in the winning times being much quicker. However, the Romney Marsh weather still played it's part with an increasing wind causing a chill for competitors on the bike section.

Last year's third placed triathlete in the standard opted for the Sprint event this year and it clearly paid off. Stuart Sorrell destroyed the competition, crossing the line first with an 8 minute lead over his nearest rival. He finished in an impressive 01.11.05, followed by Rory Hopcraft , SFA CC in 01.19.38. Both gained ground on the lead swimmer Phil Jenkins on the bike and run, but he still managed to cross the line in third place in 01.21.48.

The ladies race was a closer affair with just over 30 seconds splitting first and second place. Michaela Furlong, Bodyworks XTC from Eastbourne won in 01.28.14, with Becky Grant in second place in 01.29.50. Nicola Hill, Kent Police Tri, retained her third position from last year in 01.32.28.

The Windfarmer Standard

The Windfarmer Standard race went off just 10 minutes after the sprint competitors, with 80 competitors taking on the standard distance 1500m swim, followed by a 40km bike section taking in Lydd, East Guldeford and Camber Sands. These competitors finished off with 10km run through Lydd.

Nigel Coar racing for Tri Spirit Team and finishing in 2.49.54.

The swim saw the first two guys exit the water with just 5 seconds between them in 21.03, way ahead of the rest of the field.

The finishing times were impressive with the first man over the line in under the two hours. Andrew Fisher, Lincoln Tri, won the race in 1.58.20. He smashed his opposition by more than 4 minutes, with Mark Yeoman, Sigma Sport coming home in second with a more than respectable time of 02.02.32, with Malcolm Davies just under 2 minutes behind in third 02.04.21.

Last year's ladies' champion Beckie Woodland of South London Harriers retained her crown by winning in 2.18.08. The top two places were split by a mere 40 seconds, with Laura Fidler Premier Tri coming over the line in 2.19.14.

Third place went to Absolute Triathlon's Kathryn Berry in 02.20.31, giving her top spot in her age group of 25-29.
